Indispensable Distractions: Date Night’s More Than a Break

It’s 7 o’clock and you’re there in your favorite sushi place, steaming cup of tea in hand. He says he wants to go camping next week. You take a sip and tell him you’d prefer the beach.

He mentions that he can’t even swim and the slice of salmon slides off his chopsticks and plops into the soy sauce. Some of it gets on his shirt. The look on his face is priceless and you just laugh.

He looks sheepishly over your shoulder, just to see if no one else saw it. Not that it matters. Tonight it’s just you and him. After this, a movie or perhaps dessert?

The night is still young, so you don’t always need plans. Things can just come together nicely as they go along.

So, what’s the big deal with date nights?

Treating yourselves with some time just for each other is a healthy part of parenthood, so parents should embrace date nights as more than pleasant reminders of what brought and kept them together. These date nights are singular moments showing that the passion and intimacy is still there, reaffirmed as time goes by.

As a couple’s relationship grows and develops, these occasions bring truth to the adage that “the more things change, the more they stay the same” because they revitalize that constant behind their bond – the love they share.

They enrich and enhance how you take care of your children and each other. There is no going around it, parenting comes with challenges.

The  importance of these date nights is in meeting parents’ need to decompress and de-stress, preventing them from becoming mentally and emotionally overstretched or boxed in.

These benefits will help you better face the tests coming your way, meeting them with more flexibility and resilience than you might otherwise have.

This is especially relevant for couples just recently transitioning to life with kids and the responsibilities that come with it. Like their newborn they too have to adapt to changes in their lifestyles. They can use parent date nights as a familiar routine, an integral part of the wild ride they’re in for. On the other hand, longtime couples can use the date night routine to spice things up and try new things.

Aside from being great fun, parent date nights positively affect parents’ relationship with each other and their children. How to get smart about organizing date nights?
